Rocking the dirty hair

Recently I've discovered the key to hair that looks great all the time - stop washing it!

I'm not necessarily saying to stop washing it altogether, just to wash it way less often. I used to wash my hair every other day, and I felt like I had to. My bangs got super oily after two days and the rest of my hair just felt dirty and grimy. Turns out, I was using terrible shampoo and I was slightly inflating how dirty my hair was in my mind. I've already done several videos and posts about the shampoos and hair products I use that make my hair look as full and healthy as it does, but I've never done one strictly about what I do on those third and fourth days after a hair washing.

This is a multistage process, I'm telling you. For the products I use when washing my hair, refer to my previous haircare post, though there are a couple of other shampoos I rotate in and out now. Once I've washed my hair, I apply my leave-in, let it air dry for a few hours without brushing it, then brush it through before loosely braiding it. Then I sleep on my braids, take them out the next morning, and use a flatiron to curl a few pieces of the top layers of hair. And then I don't touch my hair for 3-4 days. With a little sea salt spray and hairspray, that style lasts. My hair may flatten out a little bit after a couple of days, but it just looks more natural that way.

So once we get to the third day, you can see the bangs getting stringy. That's when you know you're in need of a tuneup.

There are two things I need when refreshing my dirty hair - dry shampoo and sea salt spray. Both of those things help to eat away oils, and give the hair texture - which masks the oily look anyway. The most textured your hair, the less oily it looks.
I start with dry shampoo, and I use Lush's No Drought powder, which is my favorite dry shampoo I've ever used. It smells like grapefruit, doesn't leave a gray cast in the hair, and lasts way longer than spray bottles. I've had this bottle since August. Look at how much I've used!
Some people poor the No Drought in their hands to work into the scalp, but I poor the stuff directly on my head. First I apply it to my roots, then disperse it throughout my bangs, which get considerably oilier than the rest of my hair.

Then literally just rub this stuff into your hair. The cornflour absorbs oil and, and the grapefruit freshens the hair and smells really clean.
Once you've thoroughly dry shampooed your hair, grab the sea salt spray. I use the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, though Lush's Sea Spray is similar. I just prefer the Bumble and Bumble nozzle and smell over the Sea Spray.
A few spritzes is all you need. I turn my head upside-down and spray the under layers a bit too.
Then sprunch the hell out of your hair, brush your bangs out of the way, and you're ready to go.
Granted, not everyone's hair is the same, and right off the bat - your hair will look really oily on the third and fourth day. But I'm telling you - buy a cute hat or rock a ponytail while you train your hair. I trained my hair to not need to be washed as often. Supply and demand. The less you supply the shampooing, the less your hair will demand it.

Plus, I can't tell you how many compliments I get on my hair these days, and most of the time it's on third or fourth day hair. See? Clean hair doesn't necessarily mean healthy hair.

  2. I only wash my hair once a week-- and I always get compliments on it. Plus I get to enjoy the looks on peoples faces when I tell them how sporadically I wash it. :)

  3. Mm ... definitely lookin' for tips here, 'cos I don't like washing every day which I just about have to do 'cos my scalp still cranks out the same amount of oil it did when I was 20, but I don't have even half as much hair left to absorb it as I did when I was 20. I mean, I only wash it every second day because, but by the end of day two you can _tell_ I'm overdue. I would love to find a solution that didn't mean what hair I still have looks all stringy and nasty.
